MEXICALI, Baja California, June 2, 2008.-
Argentina upset Dominican Republic in four sets
(15-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-22) and both teams are
now tied with 3-1 record in Pool A of the Women’s
Pan American Cup.
Georgina Pinedo and Leticia Boscacci led a
balanced Argentinean offensive with 12 and 10
points, while Ileana Leyendeker and Yamila
Nizetich each contributed 8 points. Sidarka Nunez
and Cindy Rondon led Dominican Republic with 22
and 20 and Annerys Vargas and Milagros Cabral each
had 12.
“We entered the court with a good attitude and
never let it down despite losing the first set by
a wide margin,” said Pinedo. “We continued playing
hard and our serves were very good and a key for
the victory.”
“You have to try to win every match and that is
the kind of philosophy every coach must have. We
consider Dominican Republic a superior team than
us, but today we won despite some limitations,”
said Horacio Bastit, coach of Argentina.
“Our setter had a bad game today and we also did
not have the same attitude after winning the first
set,” said Beato Miguel Cruz. “Argentina played a
great game with good defense and block and we had
a bad one. That is sport.”
In the first set, Nunez was going working in full
gear and led the Dominicans with seven points
including two aces.
Argentina came from behind in the second to take a
19-18 lead with two consecutive aces of Espinoza.
One block by Ansaldi broke a 22-all tie, and
Pinedo closed it with a rocket from the left side.
Segui led Argentina to 8-7 and 16-15 leads at the
two technical stops. Dominican Republic tied at 17
with a smash by Nunez and tied again at 23 via an
error of Argentina. A wide attack by Dominican
Lisvel Eve and a reception mistake gave the
victory to Argentina.
In the fourth set, Pinedo’s spike broke a 9-9 tie
and Argentina never stopped. They built a 16-11
lead at the second pause and went on to win the
match. |
